Rutherford Lab
Sciences
Lesson Details
Our Rutherford Lab will take you back in time and let you experiment in Rutherford’s historic Laboratory at the University of Manchester. It features four key experiments: the cathode ray experiment, oil drop experiment, alpha scattering experiment, and alpha-beryllium experiment.
In this lesson, users can see the 3D set-up of the entire apparatus and explore how tweaking each parameter affects the atomic model conceptualised by Thomson, Rutherford, Millikan, and Chadwick. Each experiment has a play and stop feature that allows users to pause key moments in animations for rich conceptual understanding. This virtual lab benefits institutions that cannot afford the risks and cost of these nuanced experiments and visualises hard-to-teach concepts for experiential learning.
